Abstract
This study examined the effects of a short-term cognitive restructuring group program for improving stress response and dysfunctional attitude of undergraduate students. We measured the level of stress response and dysfunctional attitude of 119 undergraduate students and selected students(n=16) who got scores above 25%ile rank in both scale. Selected students were assigned to treatment and control group and treatment group were given the 6 sessions of cognitive restructuring group program. The program conducted in this study was reconstituted Choi, Seung-ae(2003)¡¯s program which was based on Beck¡¯s cognitive restructuring procedures with main activities of using DTR (Dysfunctional Thought Record). Both treatment group and control group were compared with change of stress response and dysfunctional attitude level before and after conducting program, and 4 weeks later evaluated the follow-up assessment. The results showed that stress response and dysfunctional attitude score was reported decreasing tendency in the post-program in comparison to pre-program and follow-up in comparison to post-program. Stress response showed that there was significant change in post-program and follow-up in comparison to pre-program. Dysfunctional attitude showed that there was no significant change in post-program in comparison to pre-program but there was significant change in follow-up. With this, this program showed primarily improvement of stress response and improvement of dysfunctional attitude that had stagger. It was unexpected result that dysfunctional attitude showed no significant change in post-program in comparison to pre-program against our expectation that stress response will changes with dysfunctional attitude. Maybe this result was guessed because of that this program is short-term and insubstantial statistical power due to limited number of subject. In conclusion, limitations and suggestion for future study suggested.
